THE CHEF’S SOUNDTRACK

June 15, 2021

KITCHEN songs for every occasion

One of the best parts of being back-of-house is choosing your own music to soundtrack your working day.

This playlist has you covered for every moment – from prep time and clean-up duty, to challenging your dodgy boss about your pay.

WHEN YOU HAVE A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PREP TO DO: Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

Nothing helps pass time quite as well as a group sing-along. Plus with a track length of over 8 minutes, you only need a few of these epic songs to make a pretty good dent in your prep.

WHEN YOU HAVE A FULL HOUSE AND YOU’RE GETTING SMASHED: Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

There are moments when the whole kitchen has to pull together and give 100% to keep up with the orders flying in. And there’s no better inspo than the Rocky theme song to get you pumped up. Now go get ’em, tiger!

WHEN YOU’VE JUST COPPED A LASHING FROM YOUR BOSS: Killing In The Name – Rage Against The Machine

Let’s get one thing straight – nobody should have to deal with an abusive boss. But unfortunately in our industry there are still people who think it’s OK to patronise and dehumanise their staff (even sometimes in front of customers!). Never fear, our favourite anarchists RATM are here with a song that you can really let your anger out to. Thrash around for a few minutes, especially during the “F**K you, I won’t do what you tell me” verse. And when you’re done, go write your boss an honest review on FairPlate.

WHEN YOU’RE ON CLEAN-UP DUTY: So Fresh, So Clean – Outkast

Shout out to our kitchen hands and dishies out there! Nobody LOVES doing clean up, but it’s vital to keep a kitchen running smoothly. Get yourself into a rhythm with this funky fresh jam.

WHEN YOU’RE ABOUT TO QUERY YOUR PAYSLIP: Get Up, Stand Up – Bob Marley & The Wailers

Unfortunately wage theft is rife in our industry – so much so that you might not even realise you’re being ripped off. Use the PayChecker tool in Mobilise to find out your correct rate of pay. Then, armed with your new knowledge, go out and stand up for your rights!

WHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR SECOND HOUR OF UNPAID OVERTIME: Survivor – Destiny’s Child

Seriously, is there anything worse than busting your ass for free? So many hospo workers out there are falling victim to exploitation of ‘reasonable overtime’ written in to their contracts. If you’re one of these people, we bloody salute you – it ain’t easy. But remember, there are limits to how much your boss can demand from you. Get in touch with one of our Mobilise experts for advice on your situation.

WHEN IT’S THE END OF THE NIGHT & YOU’RE ABOUT READY TO PASS OUT: Closing Time – Semisonic

A lot of kitchens have their favourite wind-down songs to finish a shift, and Closing Time is a popular and worthy choice. It sets the tone just right for packing down and heading home (or to knock-offs!). Plus if your speakers reach FOH it can serve as a not-so-subtle hint for people to finish their drinks & get going. πŸ˜‰

WHEN THE WHOLE KITCHEN IS HUNGOVER: Don’t Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin

Post-Christmas party? Knock-offs kicked on a little long? Working hungover sucks, but at least you’re all in it together. Ease yourself in to the day with the calm stylings of Bobby McFerrin. By the song’s end you’ll be feeling marginally better and whistling along.

WHEN YOU & YOUR COLLEAGUES ALL JOIN THE UNION: The Power – SNAP!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of taking things into your own hands. We could have made a whole playlist dedicated to the joys of joining your union and and collectivising with your workmates. But for now we’ll leave you with this absolute VIBE. Power to the people!
