Reunion and co. is a front for yuppies to feel stylish and trendy. The decor is lovely and modern, the food is well made with love, and the coffee is exeptional in quality. The real draw of this place is the customer service however, the owners put a huge emphasis on making sure that the customers feel like they are being looked after, and as a long term hospo worker i feel like this is a great, sustainable business model and i respect it on that level.
That is all the good stuff out of the way.
Look when i started here is said to the owner that i had university and that was a priority of mine and he said that it was fine and we can work around that commitment. He inquired as to whether or not i would work on the weekend and i countered, well i can if you pay penalty rates, and he responded that he cannot.
I don’t know what cannot means. does it mean he cannot afford it because the multiple business ventures the co owners are starting seems to indicate an increase in capital.
In any case we came to an agreement, that i would work one day on the weekend and that would be it. As it was cash in hand i didn’t mind because it ended up being around the same with my centre link income. Whatever you have to do to make ends meet right?
In any case i worked their for a few months and as time went on i got given more responsibility and longer shifts, which to be honest i didn’t really want. Eventually i found my self working both weekend days and much more hours than i wanted. The situation had changed. He was relying on me quite a lot for his business to run well, and i take pride in my ability so i was doing a good job. But i didn’t have time for my girlfriend and was missing assessments because i was always working. Every time i had an assessment on a day i was working i would request it off well in advance and i would get rebuffed and told that i needed to work so the other barista can have a day off. First of all this is a horseshit thing so many bosses do, they but the blame on you for being unavailable and try to make you accountable, it’s your cafe dude! you need to staff it properly!
In any case i had to defer a lot of assessments, which none of my teachers took kindly too.
I had had enough, i told him i wanted to have a chat about the pay, and he ignored me and then i told him i wanted days off during my exam period, he denied me, on top of this he remained open on cup day without paying anybody public holiday rates while he went to the Melbourne cup and boasted about how great his cafe was.
I simply collected my pay and didn’t return to the store. With out warning anybody. And said, if you pay everybody cash you are defrauding the Australian government of tax revenue and it is illegal, not to mention the wage theft.
In summary, pretty place but surprisingly insidious, do not recommend.
